Outreach and social justice

Social outreach group

As part of the Pastoral Plan which the Parish Council has formulated, a group has been formed to help set up a team who will help our Parish Community reach out to the wider community in many different ways.

Traditionally cathedral churches have been places of refuge for those who feel excluded and find themselves on the margins of society. In medieval times the cathedral and abbey churches often were the only source of social welfare in a community. Caring for the poor and oppressed will vary depending on need, but the door must always remain open as St Lawrence reminds us, “They are the treasure of the Church”

If we as a community can be aware of the significant social justice issues, then we are able to act upon those that concern us. If however, we are not aware of the issues, it is impossible for us to make a difference.

The group has called upon members of St Vincent de Paul Society to provide input and guidance. The group is also intending to work closely with other Social Outreach groups in the Diocese.
