Sacraments of initiation

An overview

In the sacraments of initiation - Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist - we are freed from the power of darkness. We are joined to Christ's death, burial and resurrection. We receive the Spirit of adoption making us God's sons and daughters. With the entire people of God we celebrate the memorial of the Lord's death and resurrection.

The church views these sacraments as intricately bound together, even though they are received at different intervals in our lives.

1275: Christian initiation is accomplished by three sacraments together: Baptism which is the beginning of new life; Confirmation which is its strengthening; and the Eucharist which nourishes the disciple with Christ's Body and Blood for his transformation in Christ.

1285: Baptism, the Eucharist, and the sacrament of Confirmation together constitute the "sacraments of Christian initiation," whose unity must be safeguarded. (Catholic Catechism)
